In this practical workshop, we'll explore the principles behind gardens that are healthy, abundant and enjoyable to care for. You'll learn how healthy soil supports healthy plants, why beneficial insects and other wildlife are essential allies, and how thoughtful planting can reduce pests while increasing harvests.

We'll also look at how simple permaculture principles can guide the way we design our gardens, helping us make better decisions about where things go and how they work together. Whether you're starting a new garden or improving an existing one, you'll leave with practical ideas and a clearer understanding of how to create a garden that produces more with less effort.

This workshop is suitable for experienced growers and beginners. We will cover:

Every successful permaculture design begins with observation. Before choosing plants, building gardens or digging swales, we need to understand the natural patterns already shaping a landscape.

Join Will Power from Maplewood Permaculture for a practical workshop exploring how to analyse your property through the lens of permaculture design. You'll learn how to identify the opportunities and constraints of a site by reading sun, wind, water, slope, access, existing vegetation and seasonal patterns, then use these observations to make better design decisions.

Whether you have a suburban backyard, rural property or are simply interested in learning the permaculture design process, you'll leave with practical tools you can immediately apply to your own site.

This workshop is suitable for beginners and more experienced growers.

You will learn about what makes good soil, how to test your soil quality and how to improve it over time. You will also learn how to identify pests and diseases and how to control them naturally. Fertilising the garden naturally will also be covered - when to do it and how.

The cost of the workshop is to reduce the incidence of no-shows on the day. If the cost of the workshop is an issue for you please email: environment@cessnock.nsw.gov.auas we do not want the cost to prevent anyone from attending.

Morning tea will be included.

Please bring along your own water bottle, enclosed footwear and sun protection. This workshop will include both theory and a hands-on session in the garden.

Kick off your morning by arriving early for the monthly Crop Swap hosted by Singleton Slow Food from 9:30am in the Library foyer. Browse a variety of locally grown produce, connect with fellow gardeners, and swap some of your own fresh produce for something else or pick up something fresh for a small donation. Following the Crop Swap, Maplewood Permaculture will deliver an engaging workshop exploring the core principles of permaculture and how to apply them at home. A light lunch will also be provided half-way through the workshop.

This workshop is perfect for beginners and anyone interested in growing their own food, reducing waste, and creating a more self-sufficient lifestyle.
